Missionaries are remembered for their faithfulness to the country they
loved
The year 2000 is the 100-year anniversary of the martyrdom of 239 missionaries
in China in what is known as the Boxer Uprising. Of these, 189 were Protestant
and 40 were Catholic. The two mission societies with the greatest toll
of martyrs were the China Inland Mission, now called Overseas Missionary
Fellowship, and The Christian and Missionary Alliance. The CIM (OMF) lost
79, and the C&MA lost 36. Each of these missionaries was committed to
serve the Lord in China to bring hope and light to her millions.

Li)
On
Sunday, October 29, 2000,
at Immaculate Conception Cathedral in Hong Kong, this homily was offered
by Father Francis Li from Taiyuan at a solemn Mass in honor of 120 Chinese
martyrs canonozed by John Paul II on October 1. Along with 120 priests,
this celebration of the Mass was attended by 1,200 people.)
Today's
Gospel tells us that everyone who follows Jesus will not only receive
a hundred-fold reward, but they will also meet with persecution. Jesus
noticed Peter's reaction to these words. So at the Last Supper He repeated
them to his disciples: "If the world hates you, realize that it has hated
me before you.... If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also."
(John 15:18-20) The history of the church informs us that the church grows
in the midst of persecution. "The blood of martyrs is the seed of Christians."
This is the reason that the Church in China has been growing.
