Explanation of The Petition

A petition was written and presented to the Chinese Embassy in the USA. by some immigrants in the USA who came from the said village. The date is April, 1998. It says: We are overseas Chinese. We come from the village of Long-tean, City of Changle, Province of Fujian, China. We cherish the old church in our native town. It was established in 1909, one of the oldest churches of our native land. It is a pity that the church had been misused in the 60's and 70's.

In 1991 and in 1996 our relatives in China wanted to repair and restore the old church building. The construction required a big amount of money, of which we had contributed the major part.

We regret that the structure has been pulled down twice by the local government on the grounds that it was 'illegal.' We want to point out that our relatives did not trespass on state land, not an inch of it. They just rebuilt the church on the original, historical site where the old church had stood for 90 years.

And it seems contrary to the "Freedom of Religion " policy that the Chinese government declared more than once.

We sincerely hope that you would kindly ask the local government to see to it and put things reasonable.

Thank you.

We look forward to an answer.
